J&K UG Admissions 2026–27: The Higher Education Department of Jammu and Kashmir has announced a major change in the admission process for undergraduate courses across Government Degree Colleges (GDCs). From the academic session 2026–27, admissions will no longer be based on the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). Instead, students will be selected through their Class 12 (10+2) marks using a merit-based system. The decision was taken after reviewing the previous admission cycles, where many colleges witnessed low enrollment through CUET. Students will now apply through a centralized admission portal, and seat allotment will depend on their marks and preferences. This change aims to improve accessibility, increase enrollment, and simplify the admission process for students across Jammu and Kashmir.

Why CUET Was Removed for UG Admissions

The decision to remove CUET from the admission process was taken after analyzing data from previous academic sessions. Many government colleges reported very low student intake through CUET.

  • Several colleges recorded extremely low enrollment numbers
  • Some institutions had fewer than 30 students enrolled
  • A few colleges even had zero active student enrollment
  • Students avoided CUET due to geographical and infrastructural challenges
  • Accessibility issues in remote areas impacted participation

The department concluded that the CUET-based system was not suitable for all regions of Jammu and Kashmir, especially rural and remote areas.
